We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: Cantonese Translation

‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ is a timeless classic that has been enjoyed by children and adults alike in multiple languages across the world. The singsong chanting aspect of the story is equally delightful in both Cantonese and English and I’m so pleased to have created a written Cantonese version for AJ.

How I Made this Translation

On the Cantonese Parents Facebook page (highly highly recommend you join), I received a tip from another parent who said they would copy and paste subtitles from YouTube of readings of Cantonese books to save them the hassle of writing their own translation. I loved this idea, especially because my Cantonese isn’t very strong. Unfortunately, I could never find a video of a book I wanted that actually had subtitles.

I was particularly keen to find a translation of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ because I adored this book as a child and spent many happy days in the woods on ‘bear hunts’ of my own. I did find an excellent reading of the book in Cantonese but unfortunately, there were no subtitles for me to copy.

I love this animated reading by Hilda Leung but sadly, there were no subtitles for me to utilise.

Dejected, I put the idea of a Cantonese version on the back burner for a few months. Then recently, I rewatched the video and to my pleasant surprise, I found I could understand the video nearly word for word. All my learning these last months is finally paying off!

So with the video on half speed, my headphones on with the volume up, and Pleco open on my phone, I managed to transliterate the video and so pleased I can share the translation with you! As with all my resources, it’s written in Cantonese i.e. it’s written word for word how a Cantonese speaker would speak.

Translation Printable

This text of this A4 printable fits neatly in my paperback version of the book. However, a book that has be in publication for so long will have been printed in many different shapes and sizes so you might need to adjust your printer settings to ensure you get the size you require. For further instructions, see my post describing how I create my own Cantonese books.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions to improve my translation or if you have any requests for my next translation. Happy reading!
