Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! We never celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival growing up so I haven’t really introduced it to AJ. We have been enjoying reading ‘Calvin Celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival’ by Karen Yee (review coming soon!) and I would like to embrace the holiday more as AJ gets older.

I have used it as an opportunity to introduce fractions to AJ. You may know that I am a maths teacher by day so I love things that let little ones explore maths in fun ways, such as fraction magnets. And all this talk of mooncakes recently has inspired me to make my own mooncake fraction magnets!

Make Your Own Mooncake Magnets
To make your own mooncake fraction magnets, follow these instructions:
- Cut out each mooncake and along the dotted white lines.
- Print off the mooncakes using the link below.
- Stick the printable to adhesive magnet sheets (I used these ones).
Fractions in Cantonese
Naming fractions work the opposite way than in English, i.e. you name the denominator (bottom number) before the numerator (top number). For example, three quarters is 四分之三 sei4 fan6 zi1 saam1.
So the structure for saying fractions is: <denominator> fan6 zi1 <numerator>
If you would like to learn more about maths in Cantonese, I recommend this video from 5 Minutes Cantonese. Do give the channel a follow. I am enjoying working through Amanda’s series. She is a great teacher!
