Doctor Heals Me Song (Baby Sign Language – Week 7)

The theme of week seven of Sing and Sign is all about the doctors. Now hopefully your baby won’t have much call for visiting the doctors outside of routine appointments, but when they do visit the doctors, it can be helpful to use baby signs to help out them at ease.

Similarly, if your baby hurts themselves at home or is poorly, naming and signing their pain can be very powerful. That validation goes a long way to making your baby feel better just like we saw in our positive parenting phrases last week.

Of course, we don’t want to dwell on the pain so we’re also going to be learning how to sign ‘help’ as in “mammy is going to help you.”

Signs of the Week

Here are the signs to add to your repertoire. Note that the pain sign is a directional sign, meaning where our hands are during the sign matters. When singing ‘pain’, do so over the location of the pain e.g above your head to denote a headache or in front of your stomach to indicate a stomachache.

The ‘help’ sign is also directional. You pull your hands into you to indicate you are asking for help. Pull your hands away from you while singing shows you are offering help.

‘Doctor Heals Me’ Song

C-for-Chinese at JC have lots of other songs like this on their channel. They also have videos about learning Chinese in Nepalese, Urdu, and Hindi for any multilingual families out there.

AJ loves the Nappy Changing Song from a couple of weeks ago so I’ve made it a goal to learn more rhymes and songs in Cantonese to sing to him. So in that spirit, I found this catchy tune called ‘Doctor Heals Me’ from C-for-Chinese at JC, which is all about a doctor healing different ailments. I’ve written up lyrics in Cantonese, Jyutping and English. I’ve also included a small glossary of key words to teach your baby.

As you can see, our key signs of the week map into the lyrics very neatly. You can sign ‘pain’ for stomachache and ‘ill’ for fever and runny nose (I would just mime coughing for the cough verse). Each time the doctor is mentioned, do the sign for them. And finally, you can sign ‘help’ when the doctor heals the person.

If you would like me to translate more signing songs for your baby, then let me know in the comments. Finally, remember you can always look back on our previous signing lessons and our Quizlet deck. Happy Sunday and happy signing!
