Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Bedtime Routine (Baby Sign Language – Week 8)

The week in Sing and Sign, we covered bedtime, which is always ends up being either mine and AJ’s favourite part of the day or least favourite depending on how well I soothe him.

Just like with nappy changes and getting dressed to go out, the hope is that by adding baby signs to the bedtime routine, the predictability of bedtime will make your baby calmer and more likely to settle (I need all the help I can get!)

AJ will only sleep in his pram suit during the day! You have to get your baby to nap by any means necessary.

Signs of the Week

See if you can introduce these signs to your baby’s existing bedtime routine. Remember, the number one rule of baby sign language is to always say the word aloud when singing.

AJ seems to understand the brushing teeth sign and will happily pop his toothbrush into his mouth when asked but he currently finds the sleep sign and goodnight sign very funny. It’s like he’s saying, “good one, mammy!” Oh well, it’s worth a shot.

‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ Song Sheet

Another technique to help your baby fall asleep is to sing them a lullaby, ideally the same one each night (yes, you’re trying to Pavlov your baby). So I thought I would create a song sheet for one of the most popular lullabies in the world, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, because it’s been on my bucket list to learn in Cantonese.

I’ve written up lyrics in Cantonese, Jyutping and English. I’ve also included a small glossary of key words. There’s also a dot-to-dot activity for your little one (which is also a sneaky way of getting your child to practise their numbers).

If you would like to include baby sign language during the lullaby, I would like to commend you for your efforts. Here is the sign for star.
